The beefcake relay tutorial (https://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/119) mentions that the arduino gpio pins might not be able to source enough current and so uses a transistor. Is there a risk of damaging the board (or just not being able to consistently toggle the relay)?

Great tutorial and the kits are spot on, I just ordered three of them and put the first one together. My one question is whether or not the anodes of the two diodes are supposed to be connected. This isn't clear in the instructions but given the layout of the circuit I assume it must be the case and for it to function as a flyback. Any insight would be helpful and a little description of the purpose of the a flyback would be a great addition to the tutorial.
