Is there a way to detect when the charger cable is connected? I’d like to use that in my program to start a high-power script that only needs to run once a day.

The large ground planes make it hard to rework battery on the board because it acts like a large heat sink. With patience and the correct tools, you can change the battery out but it will be hard.
