Can this be used on a digital pin? In my application, there will be either a) nothing within its sensing range (or approximately 1m away) or b) a dark object within (a fairly constant) 0.76 cm

The sensor must return <1.5V for state a. The sensor must return >3V in state b.

I can breadboard this, but you might answer before then.

Can someone explain the purpose of the * 5.0 / 1023.0? I assume the 5.0 is the 5v Vcc, is the 1023 due to a 1024 steps in the ADC?
