Another advantage to using XLR-5 rather than XLR-3 connectors is that it prevents accidentally plugging microphones into the DMX system, since XLR-3 is commonly used for audio (such as mikes).
Quite true, audio XLR-3 cables do not have the same impedance as DMX XLR-3 cables, also, plugging DMX into an XLR-3 with live audio signals can damage the DMX device.
