SIKIO

This one-day workshop will introduce students to writing their own Android applications through Processing that have the ability to interface with hardware by using the IOIO development board. We will go through the process of installing and configuring the software packages with your phone and then launch into some of the circuits in the SIKIO kit. Students will learn how to construct basic circuits and write applications to control them. Examples include: controlling a peizo speaker with an on-screen piano application, controlling servo and dc motors through screen touches and text boxes, data logging sensor readings from a photocell, and taking a picture on your phone by pressing a button in a circuit. Students will also be given free time to explore and build applications and circuits on their own, therefore coming with some ideas to try out is encouraged.

This class will tentatively be live streamed for those of you who cannot attend! This is a free service.

Materials included in this class are:

  • SIKIO Kit (Link TBA)

Prerequisites: Students should have some experience with an object-oriented programming language (Java/Processing is what we’ll be using). While we will start at ground zero with the install, we will be moving very fast through the first steps, so this class is not recommended for novices. Feel free to contact us if you have any concerns. Ages 18 and up – should have either Processing or Arduino experience (and an Android device).

What to bring: Students should bring their own Android device (tablets are ok) with Android 2.3.3 or above with a QR code reader application installed. Students are encouraged to bring their own computer, although one can be provided if we are notified in advance.
